TENNIS UPDATE:

ANNUAL CLUB TOURNAMENT REVIEW

The beginning of September saw our Annual Club Tournament come to a close, with matches being played over the last few months it was down to the final few competitors to decide our winners for this year.

The Men’s Singles final saw Jed Gaffin (pictured above) triumph over Brian Klitzner in what was another great match-up of differing styles giving the crowd plenty to applaud.

Our Men’s Doubles saw Sean Wilkins and Simon Hancock take the title by beating Richard Deem and Jed Gaffin in the final.

The next match saw the mother-and-son team of Aileen and Adam Barber win the Mixed Doubles event in a closely contested match over Richard Deem and Charlotte Mitchell, with some fantastic tennis on display throughout.

With plenty of members in attendance to support and watch the great tennis on display, they enjoyed a BBQ to complement the day ahead of the final two matches of the day.

Claire Booth and Aileen Barber secured victory in the Ladies Doubles final, defeating Alison Argyle and Zena Coupe-King in a match that was played in great spirits and plenty of smiles and laughs from all competitors to sum up what our club tournament is all about.

Our 8u event saw Mayilan Kathirgamanathan beat Reuben Needlestone (pictured above).

A huge thank you to all members who came down to enjoy the tennis on display and support what is a great event that the club puts on each year. We are already looking forward to next year’s events and hope for even more competitors entering all events next time round!

TEAM TENNIS – ADULTS

Our Adult tennis teams have had a packed match schedule over the spring and summer. We have 10 teams in the midweek evening Watford and District League (WDTL), 2 teams in the Herts League and 4 teams in the Hot Rackets (HR) League – this gives the opportunity for many members to play in leagues of varying standards.

The last few seasons have seen our WDTL Ladies A team finish within touching distance of the WDTL league title despite the level of competition intensifying year on year. At one stage this summer it felt as if we might again fade but a few great results left us waiting on the result of our closest rival’s last match. Finally, with the season completed Radlett won Division One, and hence the league, by a single set! Many thanks to Aileen for her brilliant captaincy, creating a fun, cohesive atmosphere and to Laura Collins for her fantastic support and encouragement.

The following teams also won their divisions and so will be promoted to a higher division next year:

WDTL Men’s A (captained by Chris Martin)

WDTL Men’s D (captained by Chris Parramore)

WDTL Ladies C (captained by Jeanette Ross)

WDTL Mixed B (captained by Danny Caro – securing back-to-back promotions)

Herts League Ladies (captained by Aileen – what a season she has had!)

HR Ladies3 (captained by Louise Jackman)

Well done to all!

These teams will remain in their current Divisions: WDTL Men’s B (captained by Richard Deem), WDTL Mixed A (captained by Chris Martin), WDTL Mixed C (captained by Bex Hinton), Herts League Men’s (captained by Ben Cohen), HR Ladies1 (captained by Marion Barnard) and Men’s HR (captained by Laurence Levy).

Having all been promoted last year, the WDTL Men’s C (captained by Adam Gamsa), WDTL Ladies B (captained by Jenny Davis) and HR Ladies2 (captained by Fizz Pick) fought hard in their divisions and can be comforted by the fact that they should have a slightly easier time next year!

Congratulations and huge thanks to all the captains and to Danine, for overseeing our team activity.

AUTUMN/WINTER ADULT TEAM TENNIS

If anyone is interested to play Winter team “Veteran” matches, please contact the Head Coaches coaching@rltsc.co.uk to be put in contact with the relevant captains. We have various Men’s and Ladies teams running in different age categories.

INTRA CLUB DOUBLES LEAGUE

The new series is due to start this month. Please contact Danine danine@hotmail.co.uk if you are keen to play either/both Mixed Doubles or Men’s Doubles. You must sign up as a pair please. Deadline to register is October 10.

PICKLEBALL

A few members have mentioned that they would like to see Pickleball introduced in the club. We are willing to look at this in more detail, but need someone to volunteer to come up with a business case to include why we should introduce Pickleball, where it could be played on our existing tennis courts, how would we multipurpose the court(s) for Pickleball, what additional equipment would be needed, and the cost of this ‘multipurposing’ and additional equipment. Please contact the office admin@rltsc.co.uk if you are willing to take on this investigation.

JUNIOR SQUASH UPDATE:

An amazing total of 35 Radlett juniors took part in the Hertfordshire and Middlesex County Championships in September, with the U9s and U11s playing at Radlett on September 14 and the U13-19 age groups at Nuffield (St Albans) on September 21 and 22.

Congratulations to everyone who represented the club with enthusiasm and skill, resulting in seven Radlett players becoming County champions!

The winners were Harry F (U19) - Jack T and Karen M (U17), Oliver A and Leeya P (U15), Ellie P (U13) and Sam S (U11). We also had five runners-up - Leeya P (U17), Hugh P and Amber H (U15), Kayan P (U13) and Edwin W (U9).

Last season about 50 per cent of the junior County teams were Radlett players, and many of the members are involved in regular County training with County coach Gary Nisbet at Nuffield.

The Junior club runs Sunday afternoon sessions (2.30-3.30pm Under-12s and 3.30-5pm Over-12s) and welcomes new members at any time, aged 6-19 and any standard from complete beginners to those who have played squash before.

For more information please contact Julian Craxton on 07711 748557.

SOCIAL UPDATE

We are pleased to advise that we will be hosting an Autumn Quiz Night at the club on Friday, October 18, from 7.45pm – due to popular demand a meal will be included.

Please diarise – and look out for a separate email with full details about the evening.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this edition of RLTSC News and look forward to bringing you further updates from within and around the Club in another round-up soon.
