MACCABIAH GAMES REVIEW:

Congratulations to our members, the father and son team of Danny Caro and Jacob Caro, who represented Great Britain at the recent world Maccabiah Games in Israel.

Competing in his fifth Maccabiah, and second in Masters Tennis, Danny won his opening singles’ match, beating Viktor Rohlenko of Germany 6-0, 6-0 at the Ramat Hasharon National Tennis Centre.

He was then beaten by two highly-ranked Israeli players and bowed out at the last 16 stage. Danny also competed well in the Mixed Doubles and also played an exhibition match against Jonathan Erlich (pictured above, centre) – the former Israel Davis Cup star, who won the Australian Open grand slam Men’s Doubles alongside Andy Ram in 2008. Erlich also represented Israel at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and is a two-time Wimbledon Men’s Doubles semi-finalist.

Competing at his first Maccabiah, Jacob, aged, 20, gave his all in a high-standard Open competition. He was beaten by the eventual runner-up in the Singles event and took his game to the next level and enjoyed his overall experience “immensely”.

Nicknamed 'the Jewish Olympics,' the Games featured 8,000 athletes from from 43 nations, with new sports including padel and pickleball. In their one day off sport, many athletes visited the Nova site, where more than a thousand festival-goers were massacred on October 7, 2023. The participants also attended a Q&A session with former hostage Keith Siegel and did some volunteering at a kibbutz.

The delegations also enjoyed two Friday night dinners, team parties and watched the World Cup on the beach in Tel Aviv!

Reflecting on the Maccabiah, Danny said: “It was so good to be back in Israel for the first time since 2022, mixing with Diaspora Jewish athletes, seeing some old faces from previous Games and making new friends. The USA sent a delegation of 900 and the South American countries were also strongly represented.

“As always, the sports were played to a very high level at top-class facilities. The trip to Nova was an incredibly emotional day that will live with us forever.”

Danny went on to say: “The next world Maccabiah in Israel is scheduled for 2029 and I would love to see more members from RLTSC competing. There’s also the Pan American Games in Uruguay next December, which promises to be another special gathering.”

Huge well done to Rocco for winning the Men’s Singles Event at Cambridge Tennis Club. He beat the number 1 seed 6-0, 6-4 in the final. A great week for Rocco (pictured above) and the perfect warm-up to hopefully bring more success during the Radlett Grade 3 event.

Dementia-inclusive tennis:

Our recent Dementia-Inclusive Tennis session was a fantastic success, bringing together participants, carers, volunteers and coaches for a fun and welcoming morning. Everyone enjoyed taking part in a range of adapted tennis activities designed to encourage movement, laughter, and social connection.

It was wonderful to see participants growing in confidence, supporting one another and enjoying the opportunity to stay active in a relaxed environment. The smiles, conversations and positive feedback from everyone involved highlighted the value of creating inclusive sporting opportunities for people living with dementia.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers, coaches, carers and participants for making the session such a memorable and enjoyable event. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for our next sessions after the summer - keep an eye out for dates through September. (Below: photos from the Dementia-Inclusive Tennis session)
